And it was just extraordinary. So we have these more formal reviews basically 3 times a year. And of course on the recruiting visit theyre on their best behavior. Anson: And you speak to a parent, you know, theyre doing the same thing. So heres the advantage of this. I love the accountability of it. Shes the woman that wrote Grit.. And what I love about its ultimate theme, its basically doing well by doing good. Paraphrase, and obviously were bringing in our culture. Then finally, its their soccer success. Hes an unbelievable man, but hes incredibly demanding.. You are definitely an inspiration. At the end of that exercise or drill or game or race or this or that, or the other thing, everyone is ranked. And of course hes nodding and hes not contradicting anyone. How do you win their trust? And then basically getting their personal narrative to the truth and my opinion, those are the three most critical things about what my responsibility here is for these wonderful kids I get to train. Do you like to talk with a lot of other coaches? Ive had so many train wreck failures in leadership I dont know, I could write a book on failing to develop leaders. We added one last year and its a fabulous one, and Ill read it to you. Anson: They all left the office with their tails firmly between their legs and they got to work. She says, you know what? And yeah, there were a lot of things she didnt do to get on the field for me. So its not an email you can send out to your 6,000 employees and hope to lead them. Melissa: So Ive read a lot about you and your teams core values, which I am a huge believer in core values. For example, the first core value is "we don't whine." And so what is critical is, you know, who we end up recruiting. Menu. If you gave them a one they rarely lived this core value. If a woman is incredibly confident, I am never going to touch that. To live the core values is incredibly challenging because this is a review of their character. I mean, I absolutely hate it. I just dont think this guy understands anything about the American educational system and doesnt understand who the heck we are, so lets go in and let him know this just is not what we were expecting. And you dont want them to blame anyone else. I am never going to make this travel roster unless I change. And now all of a sudden theyre going to become responsible for everything. And here are the other things that impressed me, under every single basket in the gym is a manager with a clipboard and hes recording whether or not a guy hit or missed a shot, whether or not he boxed out for a rebound or failed to. Thats my evaluation of whether or not theyre responding to anything Im telling them. Of course were all excited by huge talent and so the temptation is always to recruit talent. Its my laboratory of the human spirit for leadership development, which is the most failed leadership platform in the world, because Ive never developed a frigging leader out of it. 1-on-1 is your ability to beat someone off the dribble or stop them. Because theyre not working for you, which is why theyre in your bottom 10%. Hes led a team to 101 game winning streak, coached 13 different women to a total of 20 national Player of the Year awards, member of the UNC Hall of Fame and the Soccer Hall of Fame, and hes coached some of the best players in soccer history, including Michelle Akers, Mia Hamm, Tobin Heath, Crystal Dunn, and one of my colleagues here at Eagle Hill, Lindsay Henson. Its basically about accountability. He knows a thing or two about winning. Melissa: I love that. Melissa: So I hear youre about to begin your 41st season as head coach of the Tar Heels in the fall. And he would say it calmly and, you know, with warmth. actually neither that ancient, nor Chinese. Think about that for a second. Part of the UNC Women's Soccer philosophy is about breaking down personal narratives so that we can construct an accurate view of ourselves and how we can improve. And that was wonderfully flattering, so I prepared a presentation for some of the top people that work for Arthur Blank, including, by the way, his head coach of the Falcons was up here as was the president of Atlanta United, their MLS team. Anson: Well, to transfer you let them know thatand usually a person that wants, the person thats really below the line is someone that isnt playing much, usually, and so as a result, you know, behind your back theyre whining about everything under the sun, which, by the way, goes completely counter to our first core value, which is we dont whine. And if your particular leadership voice or coaching voice doesnt work with this person, youve got to change your voice. This woman said this was transformational. Yep, I dont work very hard. They should be starting. Because I have tried to completely change someone and I havent. These have been developed over the years. I took this right into my coaching profession. Melissa: So do you incorporate your core values back into your recruiting process? Melissa: So you talked a lot about trial and error. So thats the second principle. And she was telling a great story, and she said when she was at Columbia they just hired a Russian exile poet by the name of Joseph Brodsky. Melissa: I did look at your core values before this, and I was impressed, and I also thought they were extremely comprehensive. And but heres the dilemma for us. Anson: Well, Im one of these guys that, you know, loves to read. In the performance review a lot of the review is done by themselves, because what most of us have is we all develop a personal narrative. Sitting next to him in a comfortable chair would be some editor of Fortune magazine or one of the big journals in the industry. So now what we share is we share the top 4, we share their names and their ranks and everything, and then we share a one line statement not of where this girl ranks, but of where she is in the core values.
